By KARA O'CONNOR Villager Staff Writer WILTON -- A female University of Tampa student from Wilton was critically injured in a car crash early Tuesday morning in Tampa, Fla. According to the Tampa Police Department, three University of Tampa students were involved in a one vehicle crash around 3:22 a.m. Michelle Sams, 20, a college student from Wilton, was the rear passenger in a vehicle returning from a candlelight vigil for a classmate killed by a hit-and-run driver, said police. Two other 20-year-old University of Tampa students, Michael Fernand and Jorge Jimenez, were also in the vehicle. According to police reports, the students were traveling in a 2009 two-door Volkswagen GTI westbound on West Davis Blvd. when Fernand lost control of the vehicle, struck the curb, and then struck the concrete wall of the residence at 523 Erie Ave. According to police, Fernand and Jimenez were taken to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries and were released. As of Wednesday afternoon, Sams was still in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital's trauma intensive care unit, according to hospital officials. Officers are investigating this crash and are in the process of determining if alcohol impairment was a factor, according to police.
