'Happy to be Alive': Choking Wiltonian saved by Norwalk man

WILTON -- Being in the right place at the right time is exactly what happened last week after a Norwalk man saved a Wilton resident's life.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Kristina Wisdom, 44, of 19 Blue Ridge Lane, was speaking to her friend on the phone and suddenly started choking on some vitamins. Her friend immediately called 911 once the phone went silent, according to police.

"I think that I was trying to take too many vitamins at one time and just wasn't thinking," said Wisdom. "Then all of a sudden, I couldn't breathe, or talk. I was in total shock."

Wisdom said she tried to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself by hurling her stomach onto the kitchen counter. After that did not work, she then saw landscape worker Christian Cordero putting up a fence in her yard and ran outside to get his attention.

"I have never choked on anything in my life, but I'm CPR certified and after I tried to do the Heimlich maneuver on myself, I knew I had to find another way to get the vitamins out of my throat," she said. "I saw a man working in my yard and immediately ran out to him."

Wisdom, unable to talk and with limited breathing ability, was able to indicate by sign to Cordero that she was choking, according to police. And with her guidance, the Norwalk resident was able to perform the Heimlich maneuver on Wisdom.

"I know that Kristina Wisdom ran into the yard and gave Cordero the universal sign that she was choking," said Lt. Don Wakeman of the Wilton Police Department. "It then took him several attempts to dislodge the vitamins from her throat."

According to police, Cordero's assistance prevented further deterioration of Wisdom's medical condition. Once Wilton police, fire and EMS responded to the residence, Wisdom had sufficiently recovered and did not require transport to the hospital, said police.

"Once I finally dislodged the vitamins from my throat, I completely broke down and started to uncontrollably sob," said Wisdom. "I was so happy to be alive and so happy that he was there. He's a hero."

Thank god your OK. When your airway is blocked, you have so little time to live. Everyone must learn the heimlich maneuver. Most of all, thank God he had the sense to intervene and not stand and do nothing.

Thank you Stephanie! Yes, it was like God placed a guardian angel in my yard that day. He had never been to my house before, I didn''t even know his name, he was helping Elmer, a guy that has done some work for us. Elmer had left to get more materials and left Christian here. I am very lucky!
